MINERVA ON THE MOVE SERVICES PLATFORM

IMS platform

IMS platform

        The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) forms part of the core architecture of the new Next Generation Networking (NGN) networks. These NGN networks are able to provide fixed and mobile multimedia services. For telephony, they use a variant of Voice over IP (VoIP) to establish voice communication, which is in turn based on a variant of SIP that was standardised by 3GPP. These NGN networks can establish calls with current telephony networks, both circuit- and packet-switched.

         IMS is not only useful for providing new services. Its real aim is to be used for all types of services that can be provided over the Internet, both current and future ones. IMS will make it possible for mobile operators and ISPs to control and bill each of their services. To achieve this, IMS uses standard protocols, so a multimedia session between two IMS users, between one IMS user and another who is on the Internet, or between two users who are on the Internet takes place using the same protocols. Furthermore, those who develop applications or services will also do so over the IP protocol. Thus, IMS really makes the IP world of the Internet converge with cellular mobile telephony.

         IMS makes it possible to develop horizontal services all at once, aimed at multi-device and network integration:

* Voice over IP (PoC, Voice Messaging, etc).
* Video over IP (Video Sharing).
* File sharing.
* Group Work: Netmeeting.
* Whiteboard.
* Games (multiplayer or by turns).
* Instant messaging.

         In addition, presence services, group services, etc, can be added.
